Citizens bring concerns over privatization to MPP Jeff Leal

Peterborough, ON, Canada / (CHEXTV)

Concerns about privatization brought a number of people to MPP Jeff Leal’s office this morning. They came with questions but as Steve Guthrie reports, they left without the answers they wanted.

Roy Brady with the Peterborough Healthcare Coalition is concerned with the practise of moving procedures out of  the hospital to private clinics. Leal says this is a result of the Romanow Report on the Future of Public Healthcare

Jeff Leal, MPP, Peterborough

“Certainly in his recommendations, a number of services that would be better provided in the community at large, but certainly to make sure there is appropriate oversight of these community clinic activities and making sure they are following, in the federal government’s case, the Canada Health Act.

Roy Brady, Peterborough Healthcare Coalition

“There are policies the Ontario Government have, that come from Eric Hoskins, the minister, and our point is, they are not being enforced, that there are supposedly, not for profit private  clinics across the province of Ontario that are making profits so that they have become for profit private companies.”

Leal was also asked to take a greater role in the debate over the potential sale of Peterborough Distribution Inc. to Hydro One. It’s estimated the sale could bring 40 to 50 million dollars to city coffers but opponents say residents would lose control of their electricity supply. Leal said he was not privy to the details of the deal but is awaiting the results of a consultant’s report to be released next Tuesday

Jeff Leal, MPP, Peterborough

“It will be the basis of what I think will be a very vigorous   debate, in order for ultimately  Decide whether to enter into a relationship with Hydro One or would they look at options, there is Viridean Hydro, in the province of Ontario which is owned by a group of municipalities and acquired LDCs (Local distribution companies) across the province of Ontario)

“We want Jeff to make those feelings more public. I’d love to see him at the council meeting at Market Hall, that’s very important, he identified some questions he would like to see answered”

The meeting of committee of the whole takes place Tuesday September 6 at Market Hall.
