Arts week begins

From literature to fabric,
Arts Week in Peterborough has begun.
“I think you’re going to see how art can change your life. And how art fits anywhere,” said Arts Week’s Sue Ditta.
Each year Arts Week showcases everything the city has to offer,
from pop up exhibits like last year’s Porchapoolza, which returns as a stand along exhibit Sunday in East City….
to street displays and exhibits in local galleries and storefronts.
“And so your everyday walk down the street, if you’re feeling tired, if you’re coming home from work, if you’re in a hurry and on your way, you get to see a wonderful work of art,” Ditta said.
And to satisfy those with a literary bent,
you may want to Follow the White Whale…
A roving reading of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, which begins on Friday.
Artsweek launched with the unveiling of a new downtown mural at the intersection of Queen and Simcoe streets…
A portrait of a cloud taken by local artist Alex Bierk,
who says it took about a week before the perfect formation passed by his window.
“I would see it by pass by my studio and I would get in my car and run up to Armour Hill and try to get the shot,” Bierk said.
Bierk’s mural is part of an ongoing project in partnership with the DBIA,
which highlights Peterborough’s artistic talent.
Executive director Terry Guiel says the Bierk mural is hopefully the first of many.
“That’s my vision. That you actually do a walking tour and you see 30 murals, and they’re all uniquely different and they all showcase the wonderful arts community we have in Peterborough.”
All Arts week events are free to attend.
