Attempt to save friend’s life goes horribly wrong

A 29-year-old Clarington man is dead after being run over by a pickup truck driven by his friend.

Durham police say the pair had been consuming narcotics in the truck on Symons Road in Bowmanville.

At about 4:40 p.m. yesterday, the passenger in the truck suffered an unexpected medical episode and became unresponsive. The driver laid his friend on the road to do CPR, and then drove away to call 9-1-1.

Police say when the driver returned, he inadvertently ran over his friend, who was still lying on the road.

The passenger died later in hospital.

Zachary Pepper, 21, of Bowmanville was charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle causing death. The deceased man’s name was not released at the request of his family.
