Peterborough police say that over the summer, five small businesses experienced credit card fraud, and reported it. They say the scam occurred when people ordered items or services over the phone with a credit card. The scammer picked up the product and the business later determined the credit card was fraudulent or compromised.
The business has to pay not just for the product but for any fees incurred as well.
The service took the opportunity to remind all businesses that “there is a high risk when taking credit card information over the phone and not verifying the information provided immediately.”
If local business owners have any questions or concerns please contact Detective Constable Keith Calderwood in the Financial Crimes Unit at 705-876-1122 ext. 214.
