(Updated) Vehicle plunges off Highway 115 overpass, kills passenger

One person is dead, another in a Toronto-area hospital after a vehicle crashed from an overpass on Highway 115 Sunday night in Peterborough.

The crash happened on the southbound lanes near The Parkway just after 7 p.m.

The vehicle plunged down an embankment and rolled. Both the driver and passenger were trapped as firefighters scrambled to rescue them.

Ornge tells Newswatch that one man in his 80s was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital with critical injuries. The driver, a Markham man in his 60s, was flown to St. Michael’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said Monday that James Alwyn French, 83, of Markham died after being transported to Sunnybrook.

No word yet on the cause of the collision. OPP reopened the area around 12:30 a.m.
