Today (October 17th) is known as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
In Peterborough, some activists offered up some food for thought during the noon hour.
Outside Peterborough Square, poverty activists distributed 150 brown bags each containing an apple, granola bar and information on food insecurity – the struggle to pay for nutritious food.
It’s part of the annual nationwide “Chew On This!” campaign, staged here by the Emmanuel United Church and the YWCA’s Nourish Project.
Activists are calling for a national anti-poverty plan. Judy Amsbury with the church’s Outreach Centre says this region’s food security levels are higher than the national average:
