So with Shorelines Casino in Belleville open for business, what’s the status of the proposed Peterborough facility? Here’s Steve Guthrie with an update.
In February 2013, Peterborough city council voted to let the Ontario Lottery and gaming corporation know it was open to hosting a casino within the city. After long debate on the best location for the gaming facility, a parcel of land on Crawford Drive was identified as the preferred location. The necessary rezoning of the site was completed by city council in May of 2016.
Their decision to rezone the property was appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board by developer AON incorporated, the Peterborough Downtown Business improvement area and No Casino Peterborough, a citizen’s action group. AON and the DBIA are opposed to the Casino being built outside the downtown, No Casino Peterborough is opposed to what it says will be the negative effect a casino would have on the physical, mental and financial health of residents.
Late last year, No Casino Peterborough dropped out of the appeal citing a lack of funds to continue the process.
In just over two weeks, the OMB will hold a pre-hearing for those involved in the appeal, to clarify issues and procedures.
That’s scheduled for January 24th and 25th.
The hearing itself is scheduled for 3 weeks in May in Peterborough.
