A snowmobiler is missing after he and another man went through the ice while out for a ride on Stoney Lake early Wednesday evening.
OPP say. pair of snowmobile riders encountered open water. One rider made it across the open section; the second rider disappeared under the water. After calling 911, the first rider entered the water in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue his friend.
Peterborough County OPP and the Selwyn Fire department responded but they were not able to go out on the lake on snowmobiles since they deemed the ice conditions unsafe.
Consequently, firefighters brought in a rescue boat. They launched near Kawartha Park Road starting around 5:30 p.m. But the focus was further northeast.
One of the snowmobilers was able to make it to shore on a nearby island and was rescued by an Air Force Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter from CFB Trenton.
The 47-year-old Douro Dummer man was taken to hospital.
The other 51-year-old Douro Dimner man was not found. Police called off the search around 9 p.m. It is is expected to resume Thursday morning.
