A tentative deal was reached late Thursday afternoon ahead of a midnight strike deadline that threatened to affect 500 workers at Ventra Plastics. Details of the deal are not released before it is ratified by both parties.
Sources close to the negotiation tell CHEX News that both sides are still trying to hammer out a deal as the strike deadline looms.
Unifor Local 1987 represents around 500 workers at Ventra Plastics. Those workers can legally walk off the job at 12:01 AM Friday.
About a month ago, the union membership here voted overwhelmingly —96% in-favour of strike action if a deal couldn’t be reached. Both sides returned to the table earlier this week in an effort to avoid a strike.
The company, which makes car parts, received 550-thousand dollars from the province in
August, to upgrade robots here which would help save 10 jobs at the plant.
