Woman arrested for trying to drown son, citizens commended for stepping in

Peterborough, ON, Canada / (CHEXTV)

A citizen noticed a woman acting strangely near Rotary Park in Ajax at about 4 p.m. last Thursday. A woman was reporting holding a small child on the railing of a bridge near the park. The citizen engaged the woman in conversation and walked with the woman and the child toward the parking lot. The citizen then noticed that the woman had turned toward the beach area. She was reportedly holding the child, a three-year-old boy, under the water.

A second citizen helped the first bring the child to shore. They wrapped him in warm clothing. The boy was treated in hospital and released to his father. The woman, 29, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and was charged upon her release with attempted murder, aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life. Her identity is being withheld to protect the identity of the child.

The names of the two citizens are being put forward for recognition for their assistance in this incident.
