At what was described as a packed and an emotional meeting last night at the Hastings Civic Centre, Trent Hills council approved rezoning to allow for redevelopment of the former ball park in the village of Hastings.
But Trent Hills Director of Planning Jim Peters told CHEX News that the developer dropped “a bombshell” at the start of the meeting to council and the dozens of residents in attendance.
Edward Lee offered to remove the commercial component of his plan which includes a dozen townhouse style bungalows and a two storey duplex.
The 2.4 acres of land along Bridge and Front streets was declared surplus a decade ago after a storm damaged the ball diamond.
A group of concerned residents calling themselves Team Hastings said they weren’t against development but didn’t want all of the green space removed. Member Dennis Forbes says some progress was made but he was disappointed that the rezoning vote wasn’t deferred.
Peters said council will now wait for the developer to forward detailed designs of his proposal but there is no timeline for the project to proceed. Mayor Hector Macmillan was unavailable for comment.
