Cops, conservation officers join to combat illegal fishing

More than four hundred fishers were stopped by police or conservation authorities over the April 22 weekend, as Cobourg police joined with the authority to help combat illegal fishing.

Both uniform and plain-clothes officers conducted a combined total of 414 inspections of anglers from throughout Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the United States.

As a result of the inspections, officers issued 28 warnings under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and one under the Liquor Licence Act.

Fifteen anglers were charged under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, one charge was laid under the Ontario Fishery Regulations, and two were charged under the Liquor Licence Act.
