Levels on local waterways may be dropping but officials are continuing to warn people to be careful around them. This morning, Peterborough firefighters were dispatched to the Otonabee River after receiving reports about people in the water. Students from Thomas A Stewart Secondary School had been swimming but had returned to class by the time rescue crews arrived. Fire fighters spoke to the students about recognizing the dangers the river represents at this time of year and the fact other people could see them out there and called 911. The spot they had chosen to go into the river is only a few hundred meters above the Auburn Street generating station and the current in the area could easily wash someone downstream and over the dam.
