Guthrie garners Holnbeck Award

A longtime volunteer who helps people with disabilities has been recognized with the annual Holnbeck Award.

At city council on Monday night, Mayor Daryl Bennett presented Sonia Guthrie with the 2017 holnbeck award which is annually presented to those who assist and impact the lives of disabled residents. It has been presented since 1989 and is named after Gordon and Arbie Holnbeck.

The 34-year-old Guthrie currently runs the Tuesday Night Friendship Group at Cephas Christian Reformed Church. But she’s been helping people since she was 17 as part of a co-op while a student at Kenner Collegiate. Guthrie says she’s honoured with the recognition.
