The Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market had a bear sighting this morning – an attempt to raise awareness about Canada’s health care system.
The Peterborough Health Coalition had a giant teddy bear on display – stating it can’t “bear” to lose medicare.
The bear is named Tommy Douglas, the politician who was the driving force behind Canada’s first universal health insurance plan.
However the Coalition warns of increasing use of private-for-profit clinics, user fees and extra billings. Chairperson Roy Brady and member Charlene Avon argue everyone should have equal access to health care, regardless of wealth.
