The body of 15 year old Harley Broome was pulled from the water Saturday evening. On Monday, his school and friends remembered their classmate.
A GoFundMe Page has been set up to support Harley’s family: https://www.gofundme.com/u39bqu-in-memory-of-harley
An outpouring of grief, for a life lost far too soon.
Destiny Webster and Samuel Greer: “There were a lot of tears, like he was really close to a lot of people. Everybody adored him, he was a really good guy and didn’t deserve this at all.”
“He was way too young.”
Friends of Harley Broome wore pink Monday in tribute to their 15 year old friend.
Harley was swimming here, just past Lock 34 Saturday.
The area is known for its cliff jumping.
According to police, Harley jumped into the water just after 4 p.m. Saturday, and never surfaced.
Destiny Webster and Samuel Greer: “When one of our friends told us it was Harley we really couldn’t believe it at first. Like, it was really hard, and a lot of people were here trying to find him. It took a lot of time to actually get to him, we couldn’t find him anywhere.”
Emergency workers pulled Harley from the water four hours later.
And this memorial continues to grow. . . as friends add flowers and messages of grief.
Similar messages were found at Harley’s school, Fenelon Falls Secondary.
Ray Este, Principal, Fenelon Falls Secondary School: “When you lose a student like Harley, it’s a sad event for everyone. So we’ve been doing everything we can as a pillar of the community to support our kids and support our families.”
Students decorated Harley’s locker, and the school put up a tribute wall to help students say goodbye. They’ve prepared a year book for Harley’s classmates to sign, which will be presented to Harley’s family.
And everywhere you looked, there was the colour pink.
Este: “Harley literally and figuratively lit up the halls. One of the reasons why everyone is pink wearing pink today is because Harley often wore a bright pink sweatshirt, so it was out of tribute and respect for Harley, and it got out on social media and really picked up, so here we all are.:”
Police say the exact cause of Harley’s death will be determined by an autopsy. Cliff jumping in that area is illegal, but police acknowledge that it’s hard to stop people from doing it. And they’re asking everyone to be careful when swimming around locks and dams.
Const. Jackie Hildenbrand: We’re just hoping that people take into account the rate of water in the area, and are mindful of their own safety while swimming.”
