Updated: Utility worker dies in accident in city's west end

A utility worker has died following a work-related accident in Peterborough on Monday afternoon.

Peterborough Police responded around 3:30 p.m. to the area of Brealey Drive and Parkhill Road. Roads were closed as police investigated.

Peterborough Utilities reported that “a┬áthird-party company has made contact with overhead power lines” which knocked out power to more than 15,000 customers.

Police say the investigation has been turned over to the federal ministry, since the incident occurred while the worker was with a third party contracted to Bell Canada (which is under federal jurisdiction.)

Eric Labelle, 47, of St. Leonard, Quebec, was killed in the incident. He was a seven-year employee of Expertech.
