Herceptin Cancer Drug costs

March 17, 2011

For most people living in Ontario, one of the benefits of having OHIP is receiving free health care.

But is that really true? As Melody Belfry reports some cancer patients are being forced to shell out thousands of dollars for treatment--

All because of the size of their tumour.

I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer and I am HER2 positive.  I will be starting on Herceptin soon.  I could not imagine being told I wasn't allowed to utiilize it due to my tumor size, unless I paid for it (which I couldn't afford).  How can our OHIP determine who lives and who dies?

It is ridiculous that someone should have to wait until the tumour is larger. Shouldn't we be proactive about cancer treatments before the disease gets to the terminal stage? While I was undergoing treatment for breast cancer I met a lady who was diagnosed with HER positive breast cancer at an advanced stage. Sadly, although she was treated with Herceptin, she passed away a year and a half later. We need to treat this disease in the earliest possible stage!
