They're people who freely give of their time to help others, but ask for nothing in return. Discuss the segments in our chextv.com Forums Our most recent segment: Nelson Plant Sale For sixteen years Joanne Nelson has been going "the extra mile" to give back to the people who saved her son's life. Each mother's day weekend Joanne opens her laneway and front yard for an annual perrenial sale, all in support of retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is cancer of the eye, it has the potential to move into the brain and be life threatening, it is in most cases genetic but for Michael Nelson it simply was a fluke. His mom, Joanne credits Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto for saving his life. Joanne says she chose mothers day weekend for the plant sale because that was when her son michael lost his eye. She will be open all weekend long. Our archived segments: Amigos It can be the best time of your life, or the worst: high school. Belonging to a group and fitting in can be a challenge especially if you have intellectual limitations. One mother wanted to make a difference, and has gone the extra mile to make sure people like her son are included. Chosen Soldier Program There are nearly three thousand Canadian soldiers currently deployed in Afghanistan. Harsh, violent and unpredictable conditions make their job incredibly difficult. "The Chosen Soldier Program" was designed to give both moral and material support to our troops. Here in Peterborough, one man is going the extra mile to make sure the grassroots program is a success. hHe's helping to organize, pack and ship some essential care packages to our soldiers. On the site, you'll find a list of what items are ideal and which ones are not good for travel. Coffee Plus Finding a job can be difficult for many people. But those with mental health issues can face even more obstacles. Thanks to one man who goes "The Extra Mile", those struggling with mental issues have an opportunity to get back into the workforce. Jack Beyers It is considered the most important meal of the day, and for nearly two hundred days of the year, one man goes "the extra mile". Jack Beyers helps ensure every student at Keith Wightman Public School gets a good start to the day with a delicious and healthy breakfast. John and Dorothy Cookson The world can be a prettty harsh place, especially for some animals. With organizations such as the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society and its many volunteers, these animals can catch a break. In this segment, Michelle Ferreri introduces a couple who go "The Extra Mile" every week to help the helpless. Dream Players It's fundamental goal is to make sure everyone gets a chance. Every week, one man goes "The Extra Mile" to make sure the members of the "Dream Players" performing arts group get the chance to show their skills. Maria Fitzgerald In this segment, we meet Maria Fitzgerald, a local woman who is carrying on her brother's amazing legacy. George Hamilton Hockey is a favourite Canadian pasttime. But if you don't know how to skate - it can be challenging and frustrating. Each Saturday, one Trenton man goes "The Extra Mile" and makes learning to skate fun and easy. Kenn Grainger He's one of the main poster figures for this year's United Way Campaign, but Kenn Grainger has been going "The Extra Mile" for more than fifty years. Among some of his incredible volunteer work is teaching school children important life lessons. Jane Guthrie They've been around for nearly a hundred years and are responsible for "guiding girls" in the right direction. In this segment, we meet Jane Guthrie, a dedicated Girl Guide leader who's been going the extra mile for five years in leading the 26th Peterborough Girl Guides. Jane's day job is a hairstylist, but says she always wanted to be a teacher. Being a girl guide leader she says is the teacher inside of her. If you want to learn more about Girl Guides you can check out their website: girlguides.ca Kinsmen Club It has been around for nearly ninety years, and each December the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough goes "the extra mile" to bring us the magic of Christmas through glitter, music and festive spirit. But the annual Santa Claus Parade is only a fraction of their contribution to both our country and our community. Mary Gallagher It's inevitable, we're all getting older, and tasks that were once second nature become more challenging. But, every Thursday one remarkable woman goes "The Extra Mile" to make some residents of Applewood Manor forget their age and embrace their "golden years". Poppy Campaign Volunteers These folks "go the extra mile". They're local veterans who raise thousands of dollars through the annual Poppy Campaign. Puppet Grandma She is eighty years old and lives to brighten the days of sick children. Every day the "Puppet Grandma" goes the extra mile, spending her time knitting and choosing the right accessory to make her "little people" look just right. Sierra Leone The United Nations lists Canada as the fourth best place to live in the world. One woman knows how lucky we are to have access to education and equality. Carolyn Oster is a teacher at Port Hope High and she's going the extra mile to make sure the children of Sierra Leone have the chance to learn and be educated. The Bridge Planning daily dinner menus can be challenging and monotonous, but every Wednesday a local youth centre allows kids the opportunity to "come cook with us". With the help of volunteers who go "The Extra Mile", these tweens and teens are learning how to believe in themselves, while preparing a homecooked meal. Jeremiah Wade Imagine waking up one morning only to find out your legs no longer work. Jeremiah Wade has an incredible story and an even more astounding spirit. Despite his trauma, he goes "The Extra Mile" every day. Ken Wandless They help many children arrive safely at school each day. Crossing Guards come to be a familar face for many children who walk to and from school. One local man goes "The Extra Mile" as both a dedicated crossing guard and a library volunteer. June Wigmore April is dedicated to cancer awareness and each year nearly fourteen hundred local volunteers go the extra mile to raise money to help find a cure. In this segment, we meet June Wigmore, one of the dedicated volunteers who is following in her mother's footsteps. Carol Winter She calls herself Peterborough's Bag Lady, but those who know her call her an angel sent from above. Everyday Carol Winter goes the extra mile to help the less fortunate.
