“Deadliest weekend in decades:” police

At least 12 people died in fatal accidents on Ontario roads over the long weekend.

The most recent was last night outside of Belle River, near Windsor, when 27-year-old Michael Marchand died at the scene where his car left the road and rolled over.

Four people died in a collision near Wawa in northern Ontario Monday morning when a vehicle crashed into a rock cut.

On Sunday, a woman died and four others were injured in a three-vehicle crash in Welland.

On Saturday afternoon, a crash north of St. Marys claimed the lives of two men, and later the same day, an 80-year-old Toronto man was killed in a seven-vehicle crash on Highway 4-0-1 in Mississauga.

The OPP also report one marine fatality and one off-road vehicle death during the long weekend.

Provincial officers laid 800 charges for inattentive or distracted driving.
