Local transgender support program set to close

Peterborough, ON, Canada / (CHEXTV)

Funding for the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Gender Journeys program has ended, and Peterborough branch director Kerri Davies says the program will close at the end of next month.

Gender Journeys was established in Peterborough in 2012 to offer support for transgender people, those questioning their gender identity, and their partners and families. It was funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and while the local CMHA has applied for an extension of funding through a new grant with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the successful recipients will not be notified until the spring.

Davies says between April 1 and the date a decision is made on restarting the program, anyone in urgent need of support should contact Four County Crisis at (705)745-6484 or 1(800)995-9933.

Other community supports include the Rainbow Youth Coalition; PARN 705-749-9110; PFLAG 705-749-9723; Youthline and Translifeline.
