COLBORNE – Tragedy averted in Northumberland County this morning when a school bus got stuck on train tracks.
It happened just after 7:30 at Townline Road between County Road 31 and County Road 2 in Cramahe Township just west of Colborne.
Police say the bus driver, an adult school monitor and a single high school student were aboard at the time.
When they realized they couldn’t move, the three evacuated the bus, which was then hit by a CP train a few minutes later, OPP said.
The two conductors escaped injury as well, police said.
The bus was just beginning its route to pick up students from both high schools in Cobourg, said Joel Sloggett, CAO for Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario.
Sloggett said the bus driver deserves credit for his quick thinking and following safety protocols.
Townline Road was closed to traffic for the investigation but has since been reopened. A stop train order was in place but was lifted around 1 p.m. Officials with CP remain at the scene to investigate.
