Solar company fined

A solar company operator in Cobourg has been fined more than half a million dollars after pleading guilty to charges under the Ontario Water Resources Act and the Environmental Protection Act.

The charges stem from the 2013 construction of the ten-megawatt Hamilton Solar Facility in Hamilton Township near Brook and Baltimore Creeks. The company that managed the farm’s operations pleaded guilty to causing or permitting the discharge of sediment-laden stormwater, impairing the quality of the water, failing to notify the ministry of the discharge, and failing to employ best management practices for stormwater management, sediment and erosion control.

The company was fined $600,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $150,000 and was given 30 days to pay the fine.
