Yard sale raises money to unite Syrian refugee families

Students at Edmison Heights Public School held a yard on Saturday at Adam Scott Collegiate to help bring a family of Syrian refugees together.

The Grade 3 students – together with their teacher, parents, and other volunteers – organized a garage sale and silent auction for Safe Haven for Refugees Peterborough.

The students’ goal was $2,000 as part of the $40,000 needed to help reunite a family that arrived in Peterborough in 2016, with the rest of their family still waiting in Lebanon.

Teacher Laura Smith says the items up for sale were donated from the kids themselves and the community.

And on Monday the class announced it raised $4,187.80. The school will be hosting a pizza fundraiser on Friday aiming to top the $5,000 mark.
